We had created an entire new niche, not only that we were selling in the most unconventional of places. Sure we got into GNC and 7-11 and I was in 30,000 doors by the time I was 18 years old. 30,000 stores were selling our stuff not including the franchises that each had five ten thousand stores, those kinds of things. But we were also selling through unconventional places. We were selling through adult stores. Larry Flint called me to his office many times. He was selling us at his Hustler stores.

We were sold in all the places that sold Playboy and Hustler and Penthouse, all those places not only that, we were sold in record stores, when the CD business started go down because of Napster and Ipods coming out and all that stuff. These stores were dying, tower records was dying and we kept them afloat. People were coming into the store to buy herbal ecstasy. We were keeping the new age bookstores afloat. They were all selling herbal ecstasy. Everybody was selling herbal ecstasy. All the stores on Melrose had ashbury, you know. We had I had my own stores that we franchised, so you would see these neon ecstasy signs all over the place. We had a flagship store on Melrose. That was a store that just sold legal psychedelics and legal drugs and books on psychedelics and we had lectures and it was an insane time.

The way things work now and the easier path, the low-hanging fruit is to find the distribution and to feed it what it needs and there’s certain algorithms that you know, that we teach or that other people teach, that you can find out that teach you how to do that. So I was thinking, well, how am I going to sell this.

So I learned through the grapevine, through people that we knew that Jeff Bezos guy, who had started this bookstore online, Amazon, was going to open up their platform to third-party sellers. That means that guys like me and you could sell anything on there and it was the wild west. There was no restrictions to be becoming an Amazon seller and it was super easy. So you could open an account in 20 minutes. They made it really easy and Bezos style and you could sell anything so I thought.

So there’s great margins if you pick the right product. So a lot of people are like, oh is the amazon game over? Can you still make money on amazon? Absolutely. I think it’s just starting, but the fact is that a lot of these ultra competitive categories, the stuff that all these like mass market courses and stuff teach, those are really oversaturated. So there’s so many people in those products that you can’t really like see it and you know, like the guy is buying the 25 cent spatula and selling it for 20 bucks that that’s done, but there are other businesses.

So there’s other niche products where you can take you know, a small piece of a medium-sized pie and still do pretty well, right? The stuff where you’re taking a big piece of a big pie that stuff is gone, but there’s lots of great niches and we teach this in the course that I tell people the riches are in the niches.

So the way to think about it think about the stuff that you’re into and then narrow it down. So maybe you’re into fishing. Okay, cool. Well, everyone’s buying the cheap rods from China, but what about the little, you know, hooks that people are buying? Okay, well, now there’s a certain type of fishing for swordfish that a lot of people are into in a certain part of the country and they use a platinum, you know, hook okay?

Let’s look into that and then you look into that and you’re like, oh! there’s people making twenty thousand dollars a month selling those things and there’s only three sellers and there you go. So you got to break it down into these tiny micro niches and you got to know how to do that and we teach an algorithm for that. It’s in the one hour course. It’s super easy and you got to break it down into those niches and you got to find things that fall into those categories is one way. I mean, another way is if you’ve got money you can still go in and bully in these commoditized products right? So you can go sell toilet paper for 50 cents less than the next guy who’s willing to sell it and still make a pretty good living. I know people who do that, who make, I know one company, the guy’s making 48 million dollars a year in gross revenue but you know, his margins so tight that you know they take maybe two three million dollars in profit off 48 million dollars, right? But that’s not what we teach. What we teach is creating these products that tell a better story in niches, that are meaningful and by doing that, by telling that story better than other people you don’t really even have to have a better product, you just can speak that language of e-commerce that we’re talking about.

But every once in a while every occasion when we get a ridiculous customer, somebody who is absolutely ridiculous, I will personally call them up myself and they are always shocked that the president of the company is on the phone and not only will I get them on the phone myself, I will let them know how silly they are being in a very polite way. This goes against everything in customer service and then I will sell them something else. I will make it a point not to leave the phone call without having sold them something and it always leaves a great experience, a great story that they’re going to tell people and you know I don’t do this with reasonable customers.

So if you get a product that’s bad or you have a bad service experience or there’s an employee that maybe treated you unfairly, then of course we just refund your money and we take care of you the best that we can, always. But occasionally you will get somebody who’s being unreasonable and the best way to approach somebody who’s being unreasonable is to confront them with their unreasonableness and to just call them up and and have a real adult conversation.

And not only that, when you sell something on amazon and you’re a seller, you have to know how to speak the language of conversion for that platform and it’s very different and so the work we do is based on the work of a guy named professor Caldini who wrote the book Influence and another book called Persuasion and what we do is we teach people how to use influence in creating their listing, how to become decision architects so that when people arrive at your listing they’re already sold. I like to say often that the sale is made before the person even lands on your listing and that’s so true, so true, so more true today than ever.

Some competitors may leave reviews for your product because they don’t like you and they want people to think that your product is bad. We’ve had competitors leave reviews saying hey, there’s a fly in the product.

Literally there’s a fly in the product. There’s a this or that. We had one guy putting magnets inside some tea and being like, hey look, it sticks. We’re like, static electricity it’s a thing. So there’s a lot of that going on, but at the same time consumers are now learning that they can use their reviews, their social proof against the companies as a tool for them to get free things. So what they will do is, they will leave a bad review and then sit back and wait. People do this on twitter, they do it on Facebook, that’s why they take to social media and they’ll just sit back, maybe they’ll do something weird.

I heard of a guy who tore his shoelaces or tore the soles off his Nikes and posted it on social media and was waited for Nike to call him back and give him a new pair. But it’s this ecommerce 3.0 that has spoiled the consumer at the end of the day and it’s for those ridiculous types of things where I feel compelled to call those people back now. I don’t encourage anybody to do that because you’ll never get what you want.

If you’re trying to cheat us, you know and it’s unfair to other people that have legitimate grievances but there’s a whole faction of people that leave negative reviews for other people just so they can engage them and then get a free thing or get a refund or not have to pay for their product and as any business you especially a small business you have to have a way to address that in your business and my way is just have the CEO call them you won’t get very much of those kinds of calls but you got to call them and sometimes you just have to reason with people because people are unreasonable in general with their expectations.

I’m 46 now and I remember the first days of the internet. Younger people might not remember it. You didn’t know who to trust. You felt more secure going to a brick and mortar store, where you could touch and feel the product and buy it.

You didn’t know if you bought it on a website if they would take your credit card number, if you’d never see the product, if you’d see it in three weeks, all those variables have been taken out. So again Jeff Bezos is being proactive with his customer service. The best customer service is done before the consumer ever even buys the product. He made sure that the products on the site were of high enough quality.

He made sure that there was plenty of selection and most importantly the lowest, most competitive prices which he realized was very important. People wanted to save money now. From a customer service standpoint what Jeff Bezos did was he said, you know what, we’re going to let the customer handle their own returns. Insane! Nobody had ever done that before. He said, yeah, we believe that customers can handle most of their issues and they don’t need us and besides the cost for us to pay a representative whatever it is $5, $10 an hour on the end of the other phone to deal with a customer for an hour or two may be more than the cost of the goods.

So what what he did is he created easy returns. If you go onto amazon to this day you’ll see easy returns. If you buy something and you don’t like it, you go into the app or you go into the back end and you click return. It says, what’s your reason? You say other you’re good to go, they refund it right back to your card. In many instances you don’t even need to send it back. So it’s a form of efficiency.

I know this because my brother had that operation. It’s a team of 18 people and each of them has a specific amount of specialized knowledge. One guy cuts it open, the other guy is there to look at the aorta, the other guy does this, so it’s very very specific and there’s a number of people involved, then yes, you need a formal education because that’s the only place you can go to learn how to do that correctly.

A Matter of Perspective – Good Or Bad Choices

An old teacher of mine, this guy Stuart Wilde, who wrote this book called the Trick To Money is Having Some used to say that it’s neither good nor bad, rather it’s a tool and the way that you use it defines the result that you get from it. And I’ll tell you why. So similar to electricity, you could use it to electrocute somebody, all right.

I’m against the death penalty, but you could use it to electrocute somebody and kill them and that’s probably not a good use of electricity or you could use it to power a ventilator that sends somebody save somebody’s life who’s on you know, in the ICU. So electricity has both of those functions. Is it good or is it bad? Neither. It’s just a tool and it’s how we use it. I feel drugs have been vilified for the most part just because societally we don’t have the bandwidth to go into nuance about these things.

Starve Your Distractions, Feed Your Focus

I also don’t drink, don’t smoke. I don’t do any of that stuff. I’ll have a glass of wine with a meal something like that, but that’s about it, is that I don’t feel that those things make you a better entrepreneur. I think they don’t make you a better business person. So as far as looking at it through that lens, I tell a lot of people, especially young people, who I’m mentoring that dude like, worry about that when you’re older.

Worry about that when you have legacy, where you worry about that when you have wealth to protect. Worry about that when you are all set. Right now it’s a distraction and you don’t need that to distract you in your life. Completely unexplainable. Inexplicable for the most part. So I’ll give you a quote. This is from the great writer Khalil Gibran and I’m probably going to completely up the quote, but it’s – our children come through us but not from us. And what he’s saying there and again I probably it up, but I think the spirit of what I’m saying is there.

The spirit of what he was saying is there is that, that may not be the right question because it doesn’t really matter what I would want him to do. It’s what he’s driven to do and what he’s inspired to do. And as a parent my goal is to show him what the possibilities are, what the opportunities are and if he wants to grab those opportunities, if he wants to reach those levels, what some paths are to getting there. The thing that you cannot give a child is you cannot give a child grit. You cannot give a child struggle. You cannot give a child ambition. I can show you multiple examples of children whose parents really are pushing hard for them to be ambitious and they’re sitting at home playing Playstation. Yep. Nope, not gonna happen. I agree, it’s not going to happen. So as a parent, what you can do is be an inspiration by example.

You can lay out the path and become a decision architect, so that when they make the decision of what drives them that, they know how to get there or at least they have a few options and you can foster those ideas that they have and encourage them to follow their heart and to be creative, and to do the right thing. You could teach them how to become a good person. That’s the most important thing for me. If my kid becomes a good person and he’s a great person now, but if as he grows up he becomes a good person, then my mission as a parent is complete.

But when I go somewhere and that operation is inefficient for no good reason that makes me turn red and want to explode from the inside out. I am the guy that will spend an hour on the phone with the postmaster about the local post office which, I never go to to explain to him why it is not running efficiently and how he can improve it.

There are people that are good at crime and then there’s you. You are not good at crime, sir. Every single time you get caught. This leads to one place for you, so 15 years old talking to my parents, talking to this, you know, fat doctor dude and I’m like, you know what, this isn’t going to work for me. I’m out. And I built. Cut all my ties, didn’t really have many friends in those days and I just left. I was like, you know what, I’m going to burn my ships. I’m going to go out there, seek my fame and fortune. I had you left that.

He left organized crime, he left the organization. There was a point in time where you probably transitioned into kind of where you are now this entrepreneurial CEO business you know, entrepreneur sense and kind of bridge me into what you’re doing now. What was there a pivot or did it gradually just go into the realm of Amazon and some of the amazing things you do now or was there a story or a point in time that transitioned you?

Yeah, I’ll tell you a great story. So now all these drug dealers became legitimized. They had official businesses, they bought territories, they got distributorships. We’re in 32000 retail stores franchises. We’re in urban outfitters, warehouse music Larry Flint got us through all the sex stores and all the hustler stores. So our product was in 30-32,000 doors retail. This is pre-internet. I get the news that we broke a billion dollars in revenue. Sam Donaldson was outside wanting me to be on nightline. I did that show. It’s on YouTube. I was on Montel Williams, two Newsweek covers, LA Times, London Observer, all that stuff. I had an exotic car collection. A collection Lamborghinis, Ferraris. I got the brand new NSX, one of the best ones I bought at that time you know, boats, planes all that stuff flying, hanging around with celebrities, big parties, all that stuff and I remember six months before this happened. Very fast. I was sleeping in the back seat of an abandoned Lincoln Continental with the pages of Think And Grow Rich taped to the ceiling with as much tape as I could afford with a flashlight reading them every single night until I fell asleep.

Now, fast forward six months later. I decided I always wanted a red Ferrari. They’re not red, George. It’s Rosa Corso. Ferrari’s racing color. Don’t call it red. The salesman made it very clear that if I said red, he was not going to sell it to me and to buy a Ferrari you must have had a Ferrari. So I went through all those loops. They don’t just sell you one and it was red and I can smell the leather. It’s that soft Italian lambskin leather and I’m driving now with a beautiful model supermodel next to me to one of the fanciest restaurants in Los Angeles. It was in like west Hollywood Beverly Hills area and we pull up. The paparazzi come out. Who is it? Is it an actor, a football player? Oh no, it’s it’s the Ecstasy kid. They’re taking pictures. Now six months before, I had a shitty job at a coffee shop. These places called Kinko’s. We have to do a little bit of explaining George, because people don’t know exactly but these were shops where you went to get photocopies made and I remember that because I didn’t have a place to live and the guy knew that I didn’t have a place to live. I would catch two hours of sleep on my breaks behind the copy machine because it was warm. You’d hear the buzz and the sound of the machine making the copies of put me to sleep for a couple hours.

And people didn’t really drink that much in those days in the rave scene. So it was the drug dealers. I thought perfect, that’s exactly what I want quick. Those guys have money, they got the girls, they got the cars….that’s exactly what I need to do. And then I looked back at my life of adolescent crime and thought to myself, think again dude.

I know one of your strong suits has been recognizing trends and movements. Because the key is not jumping on a trend. The key is identifying behavior and when you look at things like that story there or even you know, your discussion of Amazon in general or the internet, I think what’s more important than the lessons of what happened, is identifying the movements and the keys to success and the clues that are now moving at light speed, right? Now they’re moving at a whole different level with NFTs and crypto and forex and things like that. So I love that that’s how your brain works. They’re seeing trends and movement and things like that, and I think that’s what I think helps like my audience for example, the most is identifying ways to recognize the trends, capitalize on the trends and you know, you know, you went from you went in different industries and trends in your environment, but also in general you know, success is going to have to be dependent on what’s going on in the marketplace, right? And right now it’s a freaking show. It’s all over the place, right? So, yeah, what do you see happening right now? What’re the keys that you see as being successful and helping people to be successful right now with everything that’s changed?

Yeah, so now what I teach, by the way, I’ve got a course, where I teach people how to sell on the Amazon platform. Yes, so that’s two parts. That’s a great question, George. So the first part to that question is I came up in the third world, where we are not entitled to anything. Nothing is guaranteed and you have to fight to survive where I came from. So things were a little different and things were different when I grew up. When we came to this country, I didn’t speak a lick of English and I got my ass kicked twice, one for being a little Jewish kid and two, for being a little Iranian kid. And it was the worst time to be either of those things. So growing up in school I had my ass handed to me daily. I thought that’s what happened at school. You would get your ass kicked. That’s what you go for. You go to get an ass kick in and you know you tell the teachers and they’d be like, what did you do? That would be the answer. That’s what it was like in the 80s. We didn’t have anti-bullying, we didn’t have any of that stuff and I believe to this day that built grit. I’m thankful for those experiences because they built thick skin. It built grit. It built resilience, which now I feel yeah, now I feel is a really a foundation for who I am.

Sometimes I let it get to me and I take on exactly what you said. You mean they’ve got their insecurities, their problems and they just want you to be miserable too. And so, when they come up, I just try to look at it as an observer, right? As opposed to taking it personally because people are going to do it all the time and they do it all the time, but you don’t take on their baggage, you process it. Take two seconds to go. This is not something I need to do or take on and then I put it away because man, it just gets after and after and after you. So it’s a process.
