But one of the questions I was going to ask you is what gave you this sense of, you know, from moving to the United States, right? And everything this constant sense of what looking for success and why that didn’t appeal to you being a doctor, but why doing this did or being on your own, like, what were you when you grew up? Were your parents instilling in you this idea that you wanted to be successful or do you think you just because I mean, I’m not a big believer that people are just born wanting to be successful? It’s usually a product of their environment. What is it that gave you that drive? What do you think?

Yes, so that’s two parts. That’s a great question, George. So the first part to that question is I came up in the third world, where we are not entitled to anything. Nothing is guaranteed and you have to fight to survive where I came from. So things were a little different and things were different when I grew up. When we came to this country, I didn’t speak a lick of English and I got my ass kicked twice, one for being a little Jewish kid and two, for being a little Iranian kid. And it was the worst time to be either of those things. So growing up in school I had my ass handed to me daily. I thought that’s what happened at school. You would get your ass kicked. That’s what you go for. You go to get an ass kick in and you know you tell the teachers and they’d be like, what did you do? That would be the answer. That’s what it was like in the 80s. We didn’t have anti-bullying, we didn’t have any of that stuff and I believe to this day that built grit. I’m thankful for those experiences because they built thick skin. It built grit. It built resilience, which now I feel yeah, now I feel is a really a foundation for who I am.

This is not something I need to do or take on and then I put it away because man, it just gets after and after and after you. So it’s a process.

And I am a huge fan of the law. I love law um and all things related to it and when I had started my first company and we can go into the story. You know, I created a billion dollars worth of revenue in my teens, creating this legal version of an illegal drug. And I remember there was a time when lawsuits were just flying and I didn’t realize I thought you would have to wrong somebody to get a lawsuit. I was wrong because there were all these vulture lawyers. And this was at a time when the employment practices laws were coming into place. So there were all these people who I never met, who I had never had any transacting with, who were suing me. And I remember. And this kind of goes into my whole philosophy about hacking life.

I just got tired of paying the legal bills because my legal bills were insane. It was back in the 90s. And I think it was at some point like 50,000 or 100,000 a week in attorney’s fees. I had in-house counsel. I had attorneys all over the place and we got this massive lawsuit from some mega-like firm. And that was like backed by a bunch of people, and I don’t even remember what it was about. But what I remember is I told my attorney don’t worry about it, he’s like, no, we got to file a response. We gotta do this. I said don’t worry about it. I got it covered. So what are you gonna do? I was a real Loose Cannon in those days, mind you teenager long hair defiant to no end. Didn’t give an about what anybody thought about me, 0 background in law.

And so I sent my secretary at the time. This was right before when secretaries were still a thing to go to the store and buy a bag of crayons and some colored drawing paper. And I just started handwriting drawing notes and I cut pictures of myself from different magazine articles. And for the people that are watching I’m showing you right now, there’s a picture of me in a pink robe with long hair, and started writing in crayons. I’m so excited to see you in court. I’m representing myself in Pro Se and I signed it in different colored crayons. And I made a beautiful envelope with that same kind of construction paper that kids use in kindergarten and I mailed it and as soon as the word got out that I was near clinically insane those lawsuits, started dropping off. It was the most miraculous thing my attorney was like we were gonna have you institutionalized but I don’t know what you did, but the majority of them fell off just because they were like, we don’t want to with this guy. He’s nuts.

What Doesn’t Kill You In Business Makes You Stronger

Buddy look, you can take your shots, call yourself a victim and fall into that victim mentality or you can reach down, grab your balls, get up and fight. You can do that. You can do that. You have a set of balls for a reason, so you can get up and you can fight. You can swing. You might get knocked down again and I did over and over again until one day I didn’t anymore but you learn. You become tougher. What doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger and it’s that grit, that resilience, that ability to create this thick skin that makes you invincible. It’s what made our ancestors invincible.

On Your Toes Against The Black Hat Game

The fact is that on amazon they want you to know very carefully very, keenly that you are playing in the big boy sandbox. That sandbox is not yours, it is theirs and they will not hesitate to slap you with a suspension if you violate their terms of service or even if you don’t. I’ve got a client right now who is selling products on amazon and a competitor who has been ignoring the amazon space for years just came on and smacked her with a copyright infringement claim and when she looked she said they’re giving copyright that has nothing to do with the product that I’m selling. So there she’s selling product B. They sent a copyright notice on product A to amazon just completely fraudulent because they know that what it will do is take her product down for two to three weeks while she fights it. In that time the competing company can come in and take over her market share. Strictly black hat tactic. So companies do that and again it comes back part to my favorite quote while you are sleeping.

The most important thing is being visible. So to be visible what we call ranking, you show up on that first page. When you search for I don’t know uh pie cutters and go on to that first page of amazon when you click through, there are about 10 or 20 items on that page. That is golden real estate. There might be 2000 products, there might be 20000 products, but whoever is on that first page has it. Whoever’s got the number one listing that’s gold. So amazon discovered hey, I know how we’re going to get up there. It’s going to catch 21 catch 22 English not so good. Um, so whichever catch it is and what they did was they designed their algorithm so that the more sales you have the higher you rank.

So if you want to be there in that top 10 of amazon, what you need to do is to generate sales because if a product has a lot of sales that means a lot of people are buying it. That means that amazon wants to have that low-hanging fruit on top because it’s the best user experience and a product that doesn’t have very many sales they can push to the back. After all, whoever wants to buy that specific brand will look for it and find it under that brand’s keywords.

I have hundreds of reviews on Shaheen, on my computer but they’re not necessarily on amazon, on google maps, or each website because I don’t own all those platforms. I have to go dig them up, put them in a graphic, put a photograph on them, put them in an email like we’re talking about 20 years worth of reviews.

You need to have them in front of where your customers are. Now that slides into what you are because right now that’s your main distribution system or at least your students is amazon but if you do sell directly on Etsy, directly on your website, directly on google maps, they need to be right there and you got to make it easy for them to do it.

Have foundational thinking. Take the time to invest in four foundations. The first foundation should be some type of real estate. The third area which is where we come in is I think everybody now should have an e-commerce business. Real estate is through the roof right now as we’re recording this and you know almost in august of 2021 real estate’s through the roof at the highest it’s ever been in the united states and likely worldwide. But doesn’t mean that you can’t start looking at these other pillars and this is the reason for this for foundation thinking. So you have your e-commerce business which still costs the same that it costs to start an e-commerce business as it did five or ten years ago. To buy a property now is going to cost you a lot more than it did five or ten years ago. So maybe we’re going to learn about real estate.

Let that cool off and in the meanwhile focus on some of these other areas. So starting an amazon business empowers you to start a company, start a storefront, start building out a brand which is what we teach. We don’t teach arbitrage or going out there and buying cheap stuff at Costco and reselling it.

We teach you how to build your own product using what the market needs and then coming out there and building that as real estate and the fourth pillar is going to be your job or your career whatever you do to feed your family, to keep pampers on your kid, to make sure that you know the wife gets to go out to dinner and you know do all the great stuff that you do or the husband goes out to dinner however you want to look at that.

But having these foundations leads you to never having a bad day because when I wake up in the morning, I go oh real estate’s really really high that’s great but the stock market’s down. I’m not bummed about it. I’ve got these other pillars and this is how you build a solid foundation that you can move forward on.

You know the right things to do and and really that’s that’s what it’s about. It’s about thinking upstream and having the resilience and discipline to be able to get around that these big companies have that. You know they don’t really care about.
